The Traditional Japanese Experience is all about intimate teaching, where every session is tailored to your interests. I want to teach you in the same way as I taught my children, in the comfort of our home and at your own pace.

Come and experience Japanese Culture by engaging in traditional activities. Whether you travel to Japan or want to improve your language skills, I know from this experience, you should be able to comfortably converse and communicate with your Japanese peers.

Teaching my children traditional Japanese culture while they were growing up in Canada, I came across a few challenges. From my personal experience, I have learnt that the most effective way of teaching is to create a hands-on and visual experience rather than a sit-down lecture approach. My culture is based on the idea of a harmonious community, and I feel that such a concept can only be taught by experiencing it first hand. So join us in celebrating and learning about 和 (wa), the word used to describe the entirety of Japanese culture.

To help narrow down your area of interest, Japanese culture can be broken down into 3 major components known as ‘Sandaiyosou’:

衣 [‘E’]- Clothing

The standard Japanese attire is the kimono. From my years of professional experience, I can show you everything there is to know about the kimono. I will teach you how and when you can wear it, but there are also many mannerisms that come with wearing a kimono. I will show you how to walk properly and with grace as well as how to offer food and drink in the traditional clothing. These are few of the things you will learn and much more!

食 [‘Shoku’]- Food and Drink

There are many intricacies tied to Japanese food. It isn’t simply a matter of cooking the food and serving it. The seasonality of the food, where it came from and how it is presented is equally important as the taste. I can teach you these things so that when one day if you decide to visit Japan, you would know what to look for depending on the time of year you choose to go. I also have close ties to many traditional chefs in Japan, and they have agreed to come and give those who are interested, a first hand experience of Japanese cuisine.

住 [‘Ju’]- Home Living

Home is where the heart is. One of the most important aspects of Japanese culture is ‘Ju’, as most activities will take place within someone’s home or a public space. Knowing how to act in the correct Japanese way is important. However ‘Ju’ does not only encompass the mannerisms, but also pertains to the placement of furniture within a home, as well as decor activities like Ikebana (Japanese flower arrangement).
